Whyisit? - Original art

A rare look behind the printed page. The illustrations presented here are the original pen-and-ink drawings created for Why Is It? by George J. Evans Jr. and others. Long before digital publishing, every cartoon began as hand-drawn artwork prepared for the printer. Many of these originals still bear production marks, blue-pencil edits, and printer's instructions that never appeared in the finished magazine. Together they offer a unique window into both the artist's craftsmanship and the publishing techniques of mid-twentieth-century America.
